Pregnancy And The Psoas Muscle

Chiropractic Care for Pregnancy in Orlando FL

What is the psoas muscle?

The psoas muscle flexes the hip joint and lifts the upper leg towards the body. It is located in the lumbar spine (low back) and extends through the pelvis to the femur. The psoas plays a large role in aligning and stabilizing the pelvis. Imbalances can be caused by prolonged postural imbalances, which are very common during the pregnancy process.

During pregnancy, the pelvis tilts forward, and the abdominal muscles stretch to accomodate the weight of the growing baby. This leads to a shortened and tightened psoas muscle.

Chronic tightness and spasm in the psoas can lead to misalignments in the pelvis.

Webster Technique addresses pelvic misalignments and psoas tightness! Both Dr. Scherina and Dr. Kasey are Webster Certified!

What is Webster Technique?

Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and adjustment. During the analysis, the bones of the pelvis, ligaments of the pelvis, and muscles that attatch to the pelvis are assessed. If sacral subluxation (misalignment of the pelvis) is found, a gentle and safe adjustment is made to help restore neuro-biomechanical function.

Why is it important to address pelvic alignment during pregnancy?

Better pelvic alignment means more room for baby! When there is better alignment, it can reduce labor time, help create an easier, more comfortable birth, and help prevent common aches and pains that are commonly seen as a pregnant mama's body rapidly changes.
